BINGEN ON THE RHINE.
The words of " Bingen on the Ehine" are by Mrs. Caroline Norton. The air was composed by Jtjdson Hutchinson, of the well-known Hutchinson Family of singers. He was born about 1817, in Milford, New Hampshire. When he was an infant his mother observed him singing the old tune of " Greenville" correctly. When but a lad, he earned enough money, by raising vegetables on his father's farm, to buy himself a violin. Fiddles in those days were looked upon as the direct invention of the evil one, and Judson was not allowed to bring his treasure to the light. But when his father found him playing two parts upon it, and accompanying his performance with his melodious voice, his musical soul was stirred, and the fiddle became a necessary part of all the family concerts. His music and his own singing of Mrs. Norton's fine lyric, contributed largely to render the words familiar. Judson Hutchinson died about 1855. |
